April’s work spans across teaching, advocacy, partnerships, and engagement. April devises learning experiences and professional development programmes that re-imagine formal learning contexts, creating projects that partner schools and education providers with the local community.
April has worked at Middlesex University as a Senior Lecturer in Dance and Partnerships lead for 12 years. In this role April worked with and led staff in the Creative Industries, Sport and Technology.
April has a significant programme of practice that is entrepreneurial and successful. April creates civic engagement programmes that partner Middlesex University with the community of Barnet. April is the founder of the Raising Aspirations programme, an initiative that works with UK schools and dance providers to advocate for creative careers, working to empower young people to take their aspirations in dance further. April’s Teaching Artist programme targets the need to develop undergraduate students' skills in creative dance leadership, partnering the Middlesex University’s dance department with local Primary Schools. The success and impact of the Teaching Artist programme has been recognised by the London Borough of Barnet, selected as a case study for the Barnet Cultural Education Strategy, demonstrating excellent practice in Teaching & Learning, Health & Wellbeing, Employability and Life Chances.
As a choreographer, April’s work has been presented nationally (live and for screen). April creates work collaboratively with people in community settings, education and beyond. See examples of April’s work here.
April holds a Masters in Professional Practice, specialising in Dance Pedagogy in UK Primary Schools, a PGCHE and a BA (Hons) in Dance Studies. April has a Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), is a Mental Health First Aider and has recently completed the 2022 Advance HE Aurora programme.
